It worsened towards her mid-twenties, working in the banking industry at her office desk day in day out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My doctor said that there was nothing he could do for me, because the range of my scoliosis was not significant enough to get treatment,\u201d says Sangyoung. \u201cHe recommended doing some exercise instead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s when Sangyoung found Pilates. \u201cPilates not only helped me overcome <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flexhk.com\/blog\/say-goodbye-back-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">back pain<\/a><\/span>, it also provided opportunities to meet with great people in the Pilates community,\u201d she says. Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scoliosis \u2013\u00a0especially when severe \u2013\u00a0cannot be completely cured by Pilates, Sangyoung says the system helps by training the muscles to support the spine. This gradually corrects the posture and reduces the symptoms caused by the medical condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27605\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27605\" src=\"https:\/\/flexhk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gabispilatesseoul-Hong-Kong-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CHLv0OjAWfg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gabispilatesseoul<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sangyoung believes that had she left her scoliosis untreated, she wouldn\u2019t be enjoying the good quality of life she now does. \u201cIf I still had that back pain from scoliosis, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could not have given my baby the quality of prenatal or postnatal care I was able to.\u201d She says untreated scoliosis would have given her hip and back pain after childbirth, negatively affecting her pregnancy and parenting experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Becoming a Pilates instructor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After practicing Pilates for a few years, Sangyoung decided to switch from a career in investment banking to Classical Pilates instruction. \u201cI thought I could help other people, too, to have a better understanding of their own body,\u201d she says. \u201cI never thought that I would be a Pilates instructor! It was a big change for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked to recommend the best programme or regimen for someone with scoliosis, Sangyoung says it varies greatly. \u201cNo two bodies are the same. However,\u00a0 keeping symmetry during a workout is important for scoliosis, and so the reformer is an excellent tool because it helps you stay in your symmetrical box.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23709\" src=\"https:\/\/flexhk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/NEW-Pilates-Contemporary.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"404\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sangyoung is always trying to evolve and refine her teaching style. \u201cIt is an ongoing process,\u201d she says. \u201cI try to teach Pilates precisely so my clients can build their powerhouse and learn basic concepts first, then start to understand their own body and postures.\u201d She compares doing Pilates like learning a language. \u201cPilates takes a while to build up, and though it is a long process, the result is priceless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pilates for other back problems\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond helping to overcome scoliosis symptoms, Pilates is also highly effective in addressing other spinal disorders. Sangyoung mentions lordosis, kyphosis, and swayback among the posture dysfunctions that stand to benefit from a consistent Pilates practice. \u201cSince most back problems are caused by poor posture, Pilates helps people understand correct posture and bone alignment,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Sangyoung advises anyone looking to Pilates to \u2018cure\u2019 their back problems to take the long view and manage expectations. \u201cAlthough people may want to see a swift change by doing Pilates in a short period of time, I want them to understand that Pilates is life-long exercise,\u201d she says. \u201cWe need to be patient keep practicing to change our body and make it stronger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24913\"
